About the American Society for Enology and Viticulture

The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (the sciences of winemaking and grape growing) is a 501 (c)(6), tax exempt professional society dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists, and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production throughout the world. Our membership includes professionals from wineries, vineyards, academic institutions and organizations.

Formed in 1950, and originally composed of researchers from the University of California and California winemakers, the ASEV has held a steady growth over the years. We currently have 1500 members, 100 Industrial Affiliates (companies), and two chapters: an Eastern U.S. Chapter and the ASEV Japan Chapter.

Services We Provide

  • Annual online subscription (calendar year) to the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (AJEV), including online access to full AJEV archives beginning 1950
  • Annual online subscription to Catalyst: Discovery into Practice
  • ASEV National Conference, with technical sessions, research forums, symposia annually in June
  • Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, presented by the ASEV and the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) is held annually in January
  • Scholarship program for students studying enology, viticulture or a directly related field offered to eligible students throughout North America
  • ASEV Technical Update
  • Symposia proceedings and other publications in addition to the AJEV

ASEV Mission

As an international community of wine and grape professionals, the Society promotes industry vitality through the exchange of information and support of research and education. We host a variety of platforms for the dissemination of basic and applied research as well as the examination of emerging issues shaping the industry. ASEV’s core strengths are continuous improvement, professional growth, and the elevation of the next generation of student scholars.
