Description: The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), in Davis, California seeks applicants for a permanent, full-time scientist in the Crops Pathology and Genetics Research Unit (GS 12/13).

This is a new position in the Crops Pathology and Genetics Research Unit. The assignment is to develop methods to measure, manage, and mediate smoke exposure of wine grapes and the resulting wine. It also covers basic research, to address gaps in the knowledge of the mechanism, as well as the physical and chemical conditions, of release/extraction of the chemical components, including precursor molecules. Roles of this new scientist position are to: 

• Evaluate a range of viticultural and enological mitigation strategies (e.g., barrier sprays, filtration, enzymes, nanoparticles) to ameliorate the impact of smoke exposure on wine quality/composition.
• Investigate the mechanism, including the physical and chemical conditions, of release/extraction of smoke-related compounds during winemaking processes.
• Utilize sensory evaluations of the finished product and combined with multivariate analyses, distinguish and classify quality attributes.
• Develop statistical models to predict the extraction of smoke-taint compounds from grapes, through processing, and in the final wine.
